On July 25th, Milagros Terán and translator Fiona Griffin captivated a standing-room-only audience at Pórtico Bookstore in Washington, D.C., with their presentation of Terán’s book Las luces en la sien / The Lights at My Temple. Before the reading even started, fans of Terán’s poetry lined up to get her to autograph books. The bookstore was packed. Terán and Griffin gave an inspiring bilingual reading of several poems, first in English, then in Spanish, interspersed with comments by Terán about the poems and how they were received when the book first came out in 1993. The reading was followed by a lively Q&A and reception, at which those present--including the ambassador of Nicaragua and distinguished poets and scholars—clearly shared Terán’s enthusiasm for the new book, which, as she put it, allows her to share her poetry with “the other half of her world,” that is, the English-speaking audience here in the US.
